Just the word "SIDS" can strike fear into the hearts of parents of newborns. There is very little concrete research and knowledge about this condition, as every case is different. However, there are a number of safety precautions you can take to help reduce the chances of your precious newborn child becoming a victim of SIDS. Below is a list of five ways you can reduce the risk of SIDS.
1. Looking after yourself during pregnancy is one of the first things you can do to help prevent SIDS. A low newborn birth weight can sometime contribute to SIDS. Being careful and sensible about prenatal care and good nutrition and exercise can very much increase the chances of giving birth to a healthier newborn baby. This of course also means avoiding smoking, drugs and alcohol while pregnant. Research has also shown that having two babies in one year can increase the risk of SIDS for the second newborn. Teen mothers also have a higher risk of their infant dying of SIDS.

2. Ensuring you have the proper bedding for the crib is crucial to reducing the risk of SIDS. Putting your newborn baby to sleep on her back, and using a firm mattress with a tight fitting sheet, is a great start. The colorful comforter and bumper pad sets can be dangerous and they are best left out of the crib. The bumper pad reduces the amount of fresh air circulating around the newborn. The combination of placing a newborn to sleep on her stomach and the comforter being too close to her face can cause the baby to rebreathe too much carbon dioxide, which is a significant factor in SIDS.
Use sleepers or baby sacks to help keep the baby warm on cold nights rather than using a blanket. Make sure that the newborn doesn't overheat, as this can also contribute to SIDS. It is important to find a balance that keeps the newborn warm enough, but not too warm.
3. Some research has shown that pacifiers can help reduce the occurrence of SIDS. The pacifier helps keep the air passage open and it also helps to keep objects away from the newborn baby's mouth and nose. This can help prevent suffocation.
4. Avoiding second-hand smoke can also reduces the risk of SIDS. Research by the Surgeon General have shown that, "Infants who die from SIDS tend to have higher concentration of nicotine in their lungs and higher levels of cotinine (a biological marker for second-hand smoke exposure) than infants who die from other causes."
5. Breastfeeding has also been shown to help reduce the risk of SIDS, although some experts do not feel it is the breastfeeding itself that reduces the risk of SIDS. However, statistics show that there are fewer breastfed newborns than formula babies who have died of SIDS. A breastfed newborn baby tend to be healthier and have a lower rate of respiratory and gastrointestinal infections, both of which can contribute to SIDS.
While there are still no guarantees and no single definable cause of SIDS, anything you can do to reduce the risks is worth the extra effort. Most of the safety precautions are common sense and good health habits. Take the time to make a few changes to prevent a possible life of heartache.
